Book Review: The Glory of Grace (The Story of the Canons of Dort)

I was very excited to see this book as I was searching for some introduction to the history surrounding the doctrines of grace (I.e. Calvinism). There are a large number of Baptists who call themselves Traditionalists (I.e. Provisionists), who reject the doctrines of grace and express a ferocious opposition to Calvinism. While it may seem fairly easy to discern the issues involved in these debates, I am afraid that not many know and understand the historical context.

It is easy to side with Traditionalists, when we believe that they hold to the historical and traditional Baptist position, until we realize that there is a Baptist tradition with roots stretching back further into history. The doctrines of grace set out in the canons of Dort form part of our history as Reformed (Calvinistic) Baptists.

The Prince of Preachers, Charles Spurgeon wrote about the blessing of God's providence to grow up with solid teaching, He said: "It is a great thing to begin the Christian life by believing good solid doctrine." Spurgeon further said: "It is good for young believers to begin with a firm hold upon those great fundamental doctrines which the Lord has taught in His Word." Spurgeon wrote these words in defense of the doctrines of grace, which he believed is the biblical gospel.

This little book with helpful illustrations helps the reader see and appreciate the historical context in which men fought for their faith. Though the book is aimed at training children in the history of our faith, it serves as a helpful introduction to anyone not familiar with the subject. I pray that more Christians will be interested in studying history, and I trust that this book will awaken a hunger for learning in the younger generation.
